Description
18" (46 cm.) Carved wooden doll with well-defined short curly hair of sculpted gesso with brown painted finish, defined facial features, deeply set sockets with large blue painted eyes, red and black upper eyeliner, single-stroke brows, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, all-wooden body excepting pewter hands and painted boots, dowel jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, with antique costume. Condition: good, original finish with paint wear especially on hair. Comments: Joel Ellis, Vermont, circa 1875. Value Points: rare large size is seldom found, included with the doll is an early wooden ladder back doll chair. The doll, named Arthur, has an oral provenance connecting him to the Ball Family of Western Massachusetts.
