Description
15" (38 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta depicting an elderly woman with sculpted grey hair loosely drawn from her face and captured in a loose coiled bun at the back of head, enamel eyes, well-defined age lines, gaunt cheek bones, strong nose, strong chin, throat hollow, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted green stockings, blue slogs with red edging, wearing original folklore costume and carrying modeled wraps of provolone cheese. Excellent condition, mid-1700s, attributed to Lorenza Mosca, the celebrated sculptor or presipio; although self-trained (he was by livelihood a bureaucrat in the government), his works are acclaimed for their artistry and realism.
