Description
7" (18 cm.) Standing upon a porcelain base is a porcelain figure of a woman with well-detailed costume including ruffled bonnet, apron, and plaid shawl, having an unusual "mask" face, and holding a swaddled baby in her arm. Excellent condition. Marks: (Meissen blue crossed swords). Comments: Meissen, mid-1800s, the figure was discussed by Estelle Johnston in a January 1991 article "Swaddled Babes" in Dolls Magazine in which she noted that the figure was from the Commedia dell'Arte series, depicting the servant Gnaga holding the swaddled babe in her arms, and pointing out the resemblance of the baby to doll's heads of the same era. Value Points: wonderfully-detailed rare figurine.
