Description
25" (64 cm.) Hand-pressed thick paste porcelain shoulderhead with pink-tinted complexion, perfectly oval face, elongated strong throat, sculpted brown hair arranged with center part and short finger curls around the sides and back of head, enhanced by deeply incised comb marks and shaded coloring, deeply-sculpted eye sockets with defined eyelids, upper-glancing blue eyes, black and red upper eyeliner, ombre eye shadow, feathered brown brows, aquiline nose, closed mouth with well-shaped lips, blushed cheeks, four sew holes on the front and four on the back of shoulderplate rim, newer muslin stitch-jointed body, pink-tinted porcelain arms, well costumed in green silk brocade dress, undergarments, stockings, woven shoes, jewelry. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: circa 1855, the maker of the doll remains a mystery; various makers have been suggested including Royal Copenhagen, Schlaggenwald, and, in an article written by Estelle Johnston in Antique Doll Collector, May 2013, Jacob Petit of France is proposed based upon the unusual placement of sew holes on the shoulderplate rim. Value Points: extremely rare doll, of which only three other examples are documented to exist, with remarkable quality of sculpting enhanced by very fine artistic painting and very rare color of hair.
