Description
34" (86 cm.) Solid domed paper mache shoulder head, heart-shaped face and elongated strong throat, painted black pate, enamel inset eyes with heavily-modeled eyelids, painted lashes and feathered brows, strong aquiline nose with impressed nostrils, slightly-parted lips of open mouth, two rows of tiny teeth, blushed cheeks, French hand-stitched human hair wig. Condition: generally excellent, few typical repairs on kid. Comments: French, circa 1830, the grand size and portrait like features indicate the luxury production of the doll, likely for an exhibition. Value Points: fine original finish enhances the portrait like qualities of the lady, especially notable sculpting of nose and chin, and with original body and wearing original cotton gown with transfer designs, matching cape, embroidered collar, velvet plush bonnet, and with original wooden traveling case in which the doll has been preserved for nearly two centuries.
