Description
4" (10 cm.) Pied Piper. Comprising a set of 12 carved wooden German characters, each with finely painted costumes, depicting the Pied Piper of Hamelin and his procession of children, including boy on a mountain goat, girl with tall flowers, boy with hobby horse, girl with baby carriage, and others. Each is marked Germany. Circa 1933. Along with a children's book The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Grosset and Dunlap, 1936, with ink inscription "Happy Birthday Shirley, Love Mr. & Mrs. Griffith". The wooden figures were favorites of Shirley, likely a gift from her early bodyguard, John "Grif" Griffin and his wife and are seen in many early photographs of her playroom shelves.
