Description
22" (56 cm.) Bisque socket head, brown glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, rose blushed eye shadow, brushstroked brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, slightly-parted lips, row of porcelain teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, metal torso with pierced sound holes, Sonneberg composition and wooden limbs, included is original costume. Condition: bisque and body excellent, phonograph mechanism not included. Marks: S 14 H 949. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1890, the unique body was created for the Edison Phonograph doll designed by Thomas Edison; the phonograph works were so fragile that production was halted after six weeks. Because the bodies still remained, however, Simon and Halbig continued to use them for standard dolls. In this particular example, a mechanical music box was added to the body, and winds from a hidden key at the back torso. Value Points: beautiful characterization on the rare model with very choice bisque, appealing music box mechanism.
