11" (28 cm.) Carved wooden socket head with gofun complexion, very expressive facial features achieved with plump cheeks, enamel eyes in narrowed half-moon shape, painted lashes, open mouth, row of teeth, dimpled chin, black silk floss hair in elaborate arrangement with original hair ornaments, painted stippled detail of hair around the face, carved wooden torso, legs and lower arms, silk crepe upper arms, dowel-articulation at hips and knees, concave shaping of back thighs designed to allow the doll to kneel, remnants of original costume included. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Japan, late 1800s. Value Points: the articulated doll is a wonderful petite size and has compelling expression.
