Description
21" (53 cm.) Arranged upon an ebony base under a blown glass dome is a gilt ormolu arrangement framing a burgundy velvet cushion upon which rests the wax floral decorations of a bride. The ormolu decorations include love bird, grape leaves, sheaths of wheat, and margeurites, each with symbolic meaning, as well as three framed mirrors and eighteen porcelain hand-painted flowers. Excellent condition. French, circa 1885. The globe de mariee was chosen by a young couple before their marriage with particular attention to choosing symbolic elements that would provide good omens for their life together; the tradition was prevalent throughout the 1800s and lasting until the 1920s in France.
