Description
24" (61 cm.) Carved wooden shoulder head with oval shaped face and strong elongated throat, dark glass enamel eyes, modeled eyelids with thick eyeliner, painted all-around lashes, brushstroked brows, aquiline nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with wide center line, strong chin, brunette human hair on original skull cap, original (somewhat sparse) coiffure with rolled curls, very firmly-stuffed tall slender kid body with high waist, shapely legs and derriere, unusual green kid edging around bodice and elbows, wooden lower arms with spatula-shaped hands. Condition: very good/excellent, condition of face and shoulders with possible early retouch and minor typical rubs, body especially sturdy. Comments: probably French, circa 1820. A note attached to the doll indicates that Estelle Johnston acquired her from a fine museum collection in Northern England, and suggests that the doll represents the French author, Georges Sands. Value Points: very rare doll with intriguing clues to provenance, unique original body and wig, and with original early costume, including bonnet and shoes.
