Description
4" (10 cm.) An oval oil painting on copper depicts a semi-profile view of a young lady, with details including pearl necklace, pearl hair comb, and brooch; the painting is enclosed in a silver frame and rests on a linen background in a leather frame. The back of the painting has two painted crests along with the words "Dame Catherine Grau Epouse de Francois Daniel Le Comte, Ecuyer, Seigneur Dessarts, Du Bus Beaumont". Included with the painting are 16 hand-painted mica overlays which, when placed atop the painting in "paper doll fashion", create various images of both men and women in elaborate costumes, ranging from warrior to nun to fashionable lady. Excellent condition of painting, some flaking of hand-painting on mica overlays. The miniature painting bears an uncanny resemblance to the young girl in the metamorphose sets #101 and #274 of this collection; the significance of the name on the back of the painting is uncertain. Late 1700s, French.
