Description

16" (41 cm.) clown. 25"overall legs lowered. Balanced upon a wooden ladder that is posed in the center of a velvet-covered base is a bisque-headed clown with white complexion, lavish clown decorations of insects and butterflies, blue glass eyes, closed mouth, two-color mohair wig, carton torso, wire upper arms and legs, bisque forearms that are attached to the top of the ladder, paper mache lower legs. When wound, music plays, the clown raises himself to upside down position, holds the pose, then lowers himself, then raises himself again and lifts his left hand, balancing on the right hand, and repeating the motion. Meanwhile two musical tunes play. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, bisque head and hands perfect. Marks: LB (key) N (script on head). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890. Value Points: very rare automata is perfectly preserved with original wig, superb original silk costume, perfectly functioning mechanism with elaborate movements, two tunes, and bisque head with rare character expression and painted clown features that is virtually unknown in this series.
