23" (58 cm.) Seated upon a wooden pedestal stool is a paper mache clown with white complexion and painted clown decoration, blue glass eyes, open mouth with protruding tongue, coral and white clown hair, carton torso, metal upper arms and legs, carton legs in bent seated pose, bisque hands. The clown, wearing his original silk costume, is holding a wooden guitar, and when wound, music plays, and he performs a series of motions: turns his head, inclines his head, leans his entire upper torso forward, strums the guitar with right hand, and lifts and lowers it with left hand, and alternately taps to the music with his right and then his left foot. He sticks his tongue in and out in a playful manner the entire time. Condition: generally excellent, costume original albeit a tad shelf dusty, mechanism and music function well. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, the automaton was featured in Lambert's original catalog as #45 Clown a La Guitare but with less movements. Value Points: rare automaton in original costume with seven movements and two tunes.
