Description
25" (64 cm.) Carved wooden socket head with very deeply defined facial features, painted black complexion and hair, black glass inset eyes with defined brows and lips, deeply sculpted short curly hair, loosely attached (puppet style) to wooden torso with all-wooden limbs excepting cloth upper arms and knees, and with wire jointing allowing easy manipulation of the figure, partial original costume. Condition: very good, original finish. Comments: Late 1700s, with early period leg rod and head loop construction, designed for use in marionette theatre or as parade marionette. The object appeared in the exhibition "Dolls - Gifts of Love 1700-1930" at the Talbot County Historical Museum. Value Points: rare early historical object with superb carving and original finish.
