Description
4 1/2" (11 cm.) x 4". The leather bound book with gold-tooled cover "The Lady's Toilet" opens to a hand-colored engraving of a stylish woman posed at her dressing table mirror. There are nine further hand-colored engravings, each illustrating a feminine beauty tip and at the same time offering a lesson in deportment. Each overlay image folds up to reveal a lesson beneath; for example, beneath the "enchanting mirror" is hidden the word "humility", and a toilette bottle labeled "a wash to smooth wrinkles" folds up to offer the remedy "contentment". Published by Rock Brothers & Payne, London, undated, mid-1800s, the firm was in business from 1844-1883. Excellent condition.
