Description
3" (8 cm.) l. painting. 5" x 4" case. The oval painting on bone of a white and black terrier with brown shading depicts the dog resting on front legs, his head turned to the side, with leather collar, and glazed highlights. Signed "Vernon Stokes". The British artist, George Vernon Stokes (1873-1954) worked in the British pastoral tradition, his work mostly centering around paintings and illustrations of dogs; notably his paintings rarely featured human figures in their scenes. This miniature painting, in brass frame under glass, and enclosed in a velvet-lined burgundy leather case, is a rare work.
