Description
9" (23 cm.) x 7 1/2" box. Within a wooden box with slide lid are thirty wooden planks, each with lithographed paper applique depicting a face or costume part of a person. The toy is designed for panels to be placed in various modalities, thus, forming different characters. The original lid label is in four languages, the English language reading "Newest conversational metamorphoses" and depicting a scene of mother and children playing the game. Excellent condition. Mid-1800s, the toy was sold at the London shop of J. Arnold who specialized in "wholesale, retail & export Toy, Archery, & Fancy Warehouse" located at 38 King William Street, London Bridge".
