Description
17" (43 cm.) l. x 11" x 6". The solid wooden large sewing box is elaborately decorated on the lid sides and interior with bone and intricately-designed mosaics, and has a blue velvet lid lining and lock and key. When the lid is lifted, the sewing box is revealed with elaborately-constructed niches and boxes, also with inlay, and along with a number of carved bone tools including unusual barrel-shaped spools with turning knobs on the lids, richly-carved case, and green silk-covered pincushion. A single dove-tailed drawer at the base pulls open to reveal a blue velvet hinged work surface, more cubicles, an unusual open-carved flat box, and a carved bone scissors, along with early playing cards. Excellent condition. Early 1800s.
