Description
11" (28 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with dowel-attachment shoulder plate, black enamel eyes, painted features, closed mouth, muslin midriff with bellows crier, muslin upper legs, wooden legs and arms, loosely attached paper mache hands and feet designed to simulate infant movements, antique chemise. Condition: generally excellent, two small repairs at limb joints. Comments: Germany, circa 1860, the tauffling baby was inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu baby introduced at the London International Exhibition of 1851, to which this model bears a remarkable resemblance. The doll is considered the inspiration for the classic European child doll or bebe that followed. Value Points: sought-after and most appealing doll with historical significance.
