17" (43 cm.) Bisque socket head, painted facial features, unusual half-moon-shaped upper-glancing eyes, black upper eyeliner, extended crease at the outer eye corners, brush-stroked feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with beaming smile, accented lips with upturned lip corners, row of painted teeth, brunette mohair wig, Sonneberg composition and wooden fully-jointed body, wearing original detailed folklore costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: B.P. 5. Comments: Swaine and Co, circa 1910, although that porcelain firm had been in existence since the 1850s they were unknown in the world of dolls until 1910 when they registered "character doll heads" which they exhibited at the Leipzeig fair and included this extremely rare model marked B.P. Value Points: the rarity of the doll is enhanced by its wonderful presence, great expression, finest bisque and painting.
