Description
11" (28 cm.) Porcelain shoulderhead, black sculpted hair brushed loosely away from her face into coiled chignon at the back of her head, painted facial features, large blue eyes, black upper eyeliner, brush-stroked brows, muslin stitch-jointed body, porcelain hands and lower legs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1860, the concept of the "sewing companion" doll was inspired by lady's magazines of the era which proposed that a favorite doll could be accessorized with favorite sewing tools as though part of her costume. Value Points: the early porcelain doll wears her original Vivandiere costume of the Civil War, including cap, drum, and decanter labeled US and Gettysburg, and with sewing accouterments including backpack as thread and needle holder and scabbard holding a sword, and is posed on her original stand.
