Wonderful Large Doll with Superbly Carved and Articulated Body

38" (97 cm.) All-gesso sculped head tilted slightly sideways,brown enamel eyes with heavy eyelids,aquiline nose,closed mouth with well defined lips,strong chin,white mohair wig in elaborate coiffure,all-wooden fully articulated body with dowel-jointing at shoulders,elbows,wrists,hips and knees,shapely torso with V-shaped definition of waist,carved wooden hands and feet with painted complexion over gesso undercoat,painted sandals. Condition: very good,paint flakes on nose and forehead,and on feet,original painted finish. Comments: age uncertain,possibly late 18th century. Value Points: wonderful large figure with carved wooden body,the costume includes a superb early silk robe with woven designs lined with transfer printed homespun cotton.
