4 1/2" (11 cm.) -12". All are simply-constructed with a turned wood shaft topped by a round head, decorated with paint to simulate hair, facial features and costume, and each bears its artist signature. Excellent condition. Late 19th century. In his book, Japanese Dolls, The Fascinating World of Ningyo, Alan Scott Pate describes the genre as "a celebration of minimalism...that delight the adult and entertain the children for which they were originally celebrated" (page 168).
