Description
13" (33 cm.) A firm-sided cornet with elaborately-carved bone handle has silk cover with hand-painted all-around scene of a woman with basket of eggs that are tumbling out, while a brown dog is pulling at her apron. The cornet appears to have a silk cover at the cone top, but it is actually the crown of a cap which conceals a double-faced bisque head which is hidden inside. When the handle is pushed, the head pops up: one side depicts a handsome young lad with blue glass eyes and closed mouth, and the other side depicts a crying face with blue glass eyes, "O" shaped crying mouth, and scowling brows. There is a ruffled collar at the neck and a silk bodice which attaches to the interior of the cone. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1880. Value Points: very rare and delightful party surprise whose luxury details include hand-painted scene on cornet, bone carved handle and rare double-faced head with original cap and costume.
