22" (56 cm.) Solid domed wax-over-paper mache shoulder head, bright blue glass sleep eyes, single stroke brows, rosy cheeks, open mouth with two rows of square-cut teeth, blonde mohair fleecy-curled hair, taufling baby with paper mache lower torso, hands and feet, cloth midriff and upper limbs, original loosely-jointed wrists and ankles, antique costume of patterned blue silk with handmade rickrack trim, undergarments, blouse, red leather boots, Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1875, the taufling baby was inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu doll exhibited in Europe in the mid-1800s for the first time. Value Points: fine original rosy complexion, original wig, body, and costume of the notable doll. Included is a vintage photograph of the original owner of the doll, holding the doll.
