Description
22" (56 cm.) Arranged upon an ebony wooden base under a blown glass dome is a superb gilt ormolu arrangement featuring a myriad of symbolic objects including lovebirds, urns, and grapes. Throughout are a number of mirrors, the center mirror, said to symbolic the soul, with etched designs, and each with ormolu mirror frame. The ormolu arrangement centers a tufted red cushion for wedding memorabilia, and hidden beneath the base is a music box which, when pulled by strings at the side, plays a melodious tune. Excellent condition. French, circa 1885, rare musical variation. The history of globes de mariee is discussed in the book, Memories of a Marriage, by Florence Theriault, 2006.
