Description
19" (48 cm.) Arranged upon an ebony base under blown glass dome is a uniquely-designed globe de mariee, commemoration of a particular wedding ceremony, featuring an elaborate gilt ormolu arrangement with surmounting lovebirds, eleven mirrors, and various other figural objects signifying future hopes for the marriage, around a pink tufted cushion upon which is resting an elaborate silk floral memento from the wedding ceremony, The globe notably features ten lozenge-shaped mirrors, symbolizing one for each child desired in the union, as well as ten strawberry figurals. Excellent collection. French, circa 1885. The history of globes de mariage is discussed in the book, Memories of a Marriage, by Florence Theriault, 2006.
