Description
10" (25 cm.) x 8 1/4" board. 14" x 12" framed. The oil painting on board depicts a homey scene of young lad seated on a ladder-back chair teaching an arithmetic lesson to Jeanne whose name is printed at the top of the slateboard which he holds. Jeanne stands attentively, her favorite doll dangling from her hand. The background scene features a fireplace and mantel, paintings on the wall and a curtained window. Signed Leon Caille in lower corner, and presented in original carved wooden frame with gilded finish. Excellent condition. The French artist, Leon Caille (1836-1907) was noted for his homey scenes of family life, with special attention to children scenes. The young lad has chalked the date 1877 on the slateboard, which is likely the date of this wonderful charming painting.
