Description
26" (66 cm.) Standing upon a tapestry covered wooden base is an Asian man with paper mache head, brown glass eyes, leather eyelids with lashes, painted features, slightly-parted lips, with human hair over painted pate, human hair goatee and long moustache, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, paper mache hands, wearing elaborate silk costume and carrying carved fan and wooden bird cage. When wound, the man nods his head and moves arm up and down in unison to thumping sound, thus causing an "attention getting" atmosphere. Condition: very good, some retouch to complexion, mechanism functions willfully. Comments: attributed to Vichy, circa 1880.
