Description

13" (33 cm.) clown. 19" overall. A wide wooden platform with white supports and velvet carpet displays two wooden flat back chairs upon which a paper mache clown is balancing. The clown has painted rosy face with clown decorations, blue glass eyes, blue and green mohair wig, carton torso and wire upper arms and legs, paper mache lower legs, bisque hands, and is wearing a blue and green silk acrobat/clown costume with sequin trim. He stands between the two chairs, and when wound he slowly raises himself to a perpendicular stage with the floor while the chairs slowly tip to sides, then continues the lift until he is upright, and finally until he appears to be turning completely before stopping and beginning his descent. Music plays throughout. The anticipation of action is enhanced by pauses at each stage. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose (impressed on platform at back). Comments: Vichy/Triboulet, circa 1910, the model was deposed by that firm. Value Points: wonderful realistic movements, original state well preserved of the rare piece in delightful size.
