21" (53 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with lightly-tinted gofun complexion, painted hair with shaded grey brushstroked details, enamel inset eyes, incised upper eyeliner, tinted feathered brows, closed mouth with incised detail on lips, sculpted ears, paper mache shoulderplate, lower torso, lower legs and feet, and lower arms and hands, muslin midriff and upper arms and legs, sexed, squeak crier in torso. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (original paper label on torso). Comments: Japan, circa 1920s, the original paper label indicates that the doll artist was Kenshosai, and that the doll "daigokujyo" (highest quality). Value Points: fine original costume including inner and outer kimonos, obi, silk slippers, folding fan, and with carved bone necklace of horse with intricate detail.
