21" (53 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with fine gofun tinted complexion, painted hair with comb-marked details, enamel inset eyes, incised upper eyeliner, tinted grey fringed brows, closed mouth with incised detail on lips, large sculpted ears, paper mache shoulderplate, lower torso, sexed, lower legs and feet, and lower arms and hands, muslin midriff and upper arms and legs. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (Japanese lettering signature on paper wrap at torso). Comments: Japan, circa 1920s, the doll artist was Takizawa Yoshio who was known as Koryusai I, who was the father of Koryusau II famous for his significant involvement in the Friendship Doll exchange; dolls. Documented pieces, such as this, by Koryusai I are rare. Value Points: fine luxury model of the child doll has beautiful painting, original paper label on torso, and is wearing an outer silk kimono with aristocratic crest symbols, three additional layers of silk kimonos including layered sleeves, and wide silk obi.
