16" (41 cm.) Solid domed paper mache shoulderhead with painted black pate, painted facial features, blue eyes, black upper eyeliner, single stroke brows closed mouth, sculpted and painted moustache and goatee, firmly-stuffed body in alertly-posed stance, wooden hands; when a hidden string at his back torso is pulled, he vigorously moves his arms up and down. Condition: very good, some light facial rubs, left thumb broken. Comments: French, circa 1840. Value Points: rare presentation of the early French doll wearing original military costume including sword, epaulets and boots, and with rare pull-string mechanism in torso.
