Description
3" (8 cm.) The oval silver frames enclose paintings of a man and woman against a shaded grey background; the woman with flowing grey curls and pronounced strong features especially of nose and chin, with plump cheeks and dark brows, and with an unusual wide brown scarf tied about her throat above a white gathered low bodice gown; the man with tired yet gentle features, balding grey hair, and shadow of a beard, wearing elaborately arranged cravat and collar, black undercollar, and blue jacket with high collar at the back. The reverse of each painting is glass-front over an elaborate arrangement of interwoven hair, presumably of the couple in younger days. Excellent condition except old hairline crack on glass back of woman's painting. Early 1800s.
