Description
65" (165 cm.) Hollow paper mache form of horse's torso and head with painted features, harness, saddle, and man's legs along the side of horse, hole in center of saddle when person's upper torso and head could emerge, while playing as though riding the horse. A decorative blanket disguises the real person's legs. The popular toy was a standard in French playrooms throughout much of the second half of the 19th century, and was created by several French firms specializing in paper mache novelties; this being an exceptionally large variation of the toy. Circa 1890.
