18" (46 cm.) Wax-headed doll has two faces which are alternately revealed by turning the cardboard cap enclosed head; each face has blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes and sculpted brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, and closed mouth with sculpted teeth; one face has furrowed expression and mouth posed as though crying, while the other has smiling expression. The head has blonde mohair wig peeking beneath the lace ruffle-trimmed cap, paper mache shoulder plate with sculpted details of bodice, firmly stuffed sateen body, paper mache lower arms and legs, pull-string "mama" crier. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Carl Bartenstein, Germany, circa 1890; the firm made a series of multi-head dolls with various expressions and complexions. Value Points: extraordinary original pristine condition, the doll is still tied in its original box, original chemise and bonnet, beautiful complexion.
