Description
22" (56 cm.) All-cloth doll with stockinette shaped facial features, painted blue glazed eyes with pronounced eyelids, rounded nose, closed mouth rosy cheeks, yarn hair braids, all-muslin body with gusset-jointing at hips designed to allow the doll to sit, stitch-jointed shoulders, original costume with embroidery details on cap and vest. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: 1930s, from a series of dolls created during the Great Depression by members of the Milwaukee WPA project group; the project specifically called for the design of a 22" doll which would be washable, jointed to sit and stand, and dressed with removable clothes. Value Points: wonderfully preserved WPA doll with original costume, the doll bears a number of ribbon awards.
