Description
6 1/2" (17 cm.) Solid domed bisque socket head, painted black bobbed hair, painted brown side-glancing googly eyes with intaglio detail of pupils, incised eyeliner, black single-stroke curvy brows, closed mouth with accent line between the slightly smiling lips, five-piece paper-mache body, painted shoes and socks. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 31-14/0. Comments: Theodor Recknagel, circa 1912, depicting the storybook character "Max" from the 19th century children's book by Wilhelm Busch. Value Points: rare character with original costume, included are two miniature dolls, Max and Moritz, by Steiff with original labels.
