Description
20" (51 cm.) x 18". A nine-panel hand-drawn and hand-tinted cartoon strip features the antics of the Katzenjammer Kids, Hans and Fritz, and the Captain and Miss Twiddle. The strip was drawn by Harold H. Knerr for 37 years from 1912-1949. This framed artwork is autographed at the bottom edge, "To Shirley Temple with ïvery extra best' wishes by Harold H. Knerr". Circa 1935. In her 1988 autobiography, Child Star, Shirley Temple relates a story about a reporter inquiring of her favorite comic strip. To the reporter's astonishment, the child star replied "Katzenjammer Kids" although she admitted in her book that her real preference had been Flash Gordon and Tarzan, and it was her father who "relished that [Katzenjammer] strip, an unintelligible mix of puns and fractured German". It may have been this impromptu accolade that earned Shirley this inscribed and autographed comic strip by Knerr.
