Description
19" (48 cm.) A fancily carved, wooden-handled, eight-sided parasol with mauve silk and Alencol lace cover has an unusual tip, being a bisque poupee head with blue enamel eyes, painted features, closed mouth, original elaborate mohair curled wig, pierced ears, carton torso, wire upper arms, bisque hands. The poupee is costumed in mauve silk to match the parasol which forms the doll's skirt, and there is a rose sateen pleated fan attached to each sleeve which is designed to flare open when the doll raises and lowers her arms. Condition: generally excellent, some distress to silk skirt. Comments: the "Ombrella Folie" was deposed by Germain Lombart in 1874, as a luxury "nouveautes" of the era; the patent design and a history of the firm are in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer, page 373. Value Points: the imaginatively designed and intricate luxury favor is very rare to find, especially with the "fan" detail, and in original state of presentation.
