Description
15" (38 cm.) Bisque shoulder head with oval face and elongated throat, cobalt blue glass eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with outlined lips, ears pierced into head, blonde mohair wig over cork pate,kid-over-wooden body with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, bisque lower arms, bisque lower legs with bare feet, well costumed in white pique gown, undergarments, stockings, ankle boots, woven bonnet. Condition: generally excellent, right thumb tip missing. Marks: E.A. Rochard Depose Brevete SGDG (red ink inside shoulderplate). Comments: Edmund Rochard deposed his 1868 system for placement of Stanhopes or other optical systems inside the head or shoulderplate of a doll; this system was designed to appear on the outside as simply a jewelry item (seen in this example as a "diamond" with coral and gold frame and gold painted necklace) but, when viewed through the oval cut-out at back of the shoulder plate would, magically, reveal whatever scene was hidden in the Stanhope "jewel". Value Points: extremely rare poupee, quite beautiful as a jewel-decorated lady, and value-enhanced by the secret hidden presence of her Rochard image. The actual doll is shown in Theimer's Panorama of Parisienne Dolls, page 253.
