Description
18" (46 cm.) "l. x 14'h. panel. 24" x 21" frame. The stumpwork embroidered panel in shades of blue, green, brown, cream and gold, features a family of four (father, mother, boy and girl) in a garden-like setting, the boy feeding his seated dog, and mother and daughter picking fruit and flowers. The garden is filled with flowers and plants, a well-detailed house with smoke from the chimney is in the background, another puppy chases a bunny, and the garden and pond are filled with other animals, birds, fish, a snail, butterflies and more. The sun is well-detailed, including its face, and, so too, is the detail on the faces of the family while their costumes are accented with tiny seed pearls. The panel is edged with silver metallic lace and rests protected under old glass in a wooden frame with tortoise shell veneer. Excellent condition. English, mid-1600s.
