Description

7" (18 cm.) Seated in a painted tin automobile similar to the German Adler car with open top and four spoked wheels painted to simulate rubber tires, is a man wearing painted white suit with hat and brown shoes, a tin horn held to his mouth, his right hand clasping the steering wheel. When coil-spring wound, he erratically drives along, and periodically blowing the horn that actually (should) sound from the bellows hidden in undercarriage that connects to turning wheels. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well, bellows cover needs replacing, few paint flakes. Marked Lehmann. Comments: Lehmann's EPL model 490, circa 1905, the toy was inspired by the incessant honking and inexperienced driving of the new-fangled automobiles, providing a realistic vignette of early 20th century life.
