Description
10" (25 cm.) x 6". Oval watercolor paintings depict the French Emperor and Empress with elaborate detail of jewelry and medals, with artist signature Delaroche on the side of each, and presented in a carved bone and inlaid frame embellished with symbols such as fleur-de-lis, eagle, and crown. Excellent condition. Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) was noted for his artistic renditions of famous historical events, having a particular affinity for the subjects of Napoleon and Josephine; it is likely that this pair was created in the manner of Delaroche, sometime after his lifetime, with the aim of benefitting from the Delaroche popularity.
