Description
24" (61 cm.) x 20". The profile oil portrait painting on canvas of young woman is notable not only for nuanced expressive facial features and gaze, but also for the very detailed elements of her folklore costume including embroidery, trim and even wrinkles of the sleeves. The costume is accentuated by painted earrings and coral necklace. In original carved wooden gilt frame. Austrian-born Anton Romako (1832-1889) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and later continued his studies in Munich, Venice, Rome and London. It was during his travels in Europe that he settled upon genre scenes of popular culture as his favored style and then, settling in Italy from 1857-1876, he became in demand for his depictions of village life and peoples, of which this is a choice example in fine original condition.
