Description

18". A bisque-headed lady with distinctive portrait face, aristocratic pose and sculpting, blue eyes, high cheek bones, aquiline nose, closed mouth, white/blonde mohair wig in elaborate coiffure, separate bisque shoulder plate, shapely carton torso and legs, bisque forearms, is posed standing upon a textured velvet-covered base. She is wearing a maroon and ivory silk gown with lace overlay, silk-covered buttons, matching stockings and shoes, and is holding a silk-covered fan in her right hand and an elaborate ormolu lorgnette in her left hand. The original early Lambert key is attached. The doll is marked 3. The interior of the base is marked No. 12 Marquise. There is an original paper tune label (tune illegible) on base along with original (illegible) boutique label.

Movements: She turns her head to the right, pauses, then lifts the lorgnette as though to view the social scene. Then she turns her head to the left and lifts the fan. She fans herself rapidly three times in succession by turning her wrist to and fro. Music plays.

Historical References: The automaton appeared in Lambert's catalog listed as No. 12 Marquise. The model is distinctive for her portrait like face and original costume, unusual wrist movement, and refinement of accessories. Circa 1890.
