Description

An oval gilded gesso-over-wooden frame with elaborately detailed carvings of flowers and borders encloses a pastel classical scene of reclining woman with lyre. The woman is dimensionally separate from the pale blue sky background and she has an articulated arm and wrist. Atop the oval frame is a smaller rounded frame that encloses a porcelain-faced clock. There is a keywind, and a pull-string stop/start at the right side. The clock is marked Tharin a paris.

Movements: Her arm and wrist move in a realistic manner, as though she is strumming the harp. Music plays.

Historical References: The delicate romantic theme of the animated painting is exceptionally rare, as the en vogue style of the mid-century more lent itself to irony or gilded elegance. The luxury quality of this animated painting is emphasized by the quality of the framing and the surmounted clock. Signed pieces by Tharin are very difficult to find.
