15" (38 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead depicting a very plump young woman with defined double chin and generous bosom, black painted pate, deeply-set enamel eyes, closed mouth with solemn expression, tow-wrapped armature posable body with carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted blue stockings, tan shoes with red buckles, wearing brown and tan silk and velvet costume, wire-framed coiffe with matching lace trim to jacket sleeves, and carrying double-handled pottery jug. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, mid-1700s, attributed to the workshops of Bottigliero, distinctive features include unusual simple painting of hair, plump modeling, sad expression, on this rare and compelling model.
