Description
16" (41 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead of man with bald pate and painted hair at sides and back, sculpted ears, incised age lines on forehead, deeply-set sockets with enamel eyes, upturned long nose, mouth modeled open with defined tongue, defined beard stubble and chin wart, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, unusual painted brown shoes with ankle straps, wearing original innkeeper costume including apron and arm towel. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, late 1700s, attributed to the workshops of Aniello Ingaldi, whose works included not only presepio such as this example, but also a Neapolitan miniature park of bourgeoisie and nobility of porcelain figures; undoubtedly some of the models were created in each medium.
