Description

17" (43 cm). The pressed bisque lady doll has an oval-shaped swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, pale blue glass inset eyes with darker outer rims, painted eyeliner, feathered lashes and brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with pale accented lips and pierced ears. The blonde mohair wig over cork pate has long waist-length original braids. The body is carved wood with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, and the waist is swivel-jointed allowing the possibility of infinite posing. The doll wears a fine muslin day dress of the period with superb detail of lace and embroidery, and pleated demi-train. The doll is marked "4" on shoulder plate, and has original paper label "A La Poupee de Nuremberg, 21 Rue Choiseul, Trousseaux Complets, Reparations, Paris". The luxury doll boutique A La Poupee de Nuremberg was founded by Madame Lavalle-Peronne in 1864, the same time as the founding of her children_s journal La Poupee Modele. A brilliant marketing person, she used the vehicle of her magazine to promote costumes and accessories offered in her boutique. Each promotion was centered around the theme of her signature doll named "Lily", of which this is a very rare example.
